How could something so Italian originally come from Mexico? Sail boats. European master mariners brought native plants and seeds of the Americas back to their homelands. The varieties that caught interest were grown, selected, and developed over time and often returned to the Americas with settlers in their new forms. Italians renamed this cucurbit 'zucchino' and New England colonists later named it again- calling it squash. Early American squash enthusiasts included George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Today there are almost as many varieties of summer squash as Italian boats that crossed the Atlantic. In the spirit of watercraft, we recommend picking this variety at the dingy stage rather than waiting for it to turn into a yacht. If you are planning on saving seeds, you can let it grow as big as a battleship.
